The unplug test
Unplug the router and this UPS does not notice, because its job has nothing to do with your network. It keeps converting battery power to AC for whatever is plugged into its eight outlets, regulates voltage, and shows status on its own LCD panel exactly as before. What you lose is the SmartConnect web portal: no remote status page, no push alert to your phone if a fault happens while you're away, and no one-click cloud firmware push. Plug a computer into the USB port and run APC's own PowerChute software, or point Network UPS Tools at it, and you get local monitoring and automatic shutdown with nobody's server involved at all.
Why this tier: Ships with a built-in SmartConnect Ethernet port and a genuine APC/Schneider Electric cloud service (a web portal that needs account registration), but registration is optional: the manufacturer's own product page and marketing collateral describe SmartConnect purely as a remote-monitoring add-on, and the LCD panel, AVR, battery backup, and surge protection are standard line-interactive UPS functions that do not depend on that port being connected to anything. Local graceful shutdown is available over USB via APC's own PowerChute Serial Shutdown software with no cloud involved. This is the vendor-cloud-exists-but-core-function-is-fully-local row of the decision table.

- Whether a lapsed SmartConnect plan costs event notifications, remote diagnostic tests and remote firmware upgrades that worked at purchase is UNRESOLVED and no longer cited here. A previous pass carried a Class A citation to smartconnect-support.apc.com describing exactly that, written without the page being reachable; the source has been removed. The single Wayback capture of that URL (2022-09-06) is a page titled 'Select your warranty' and says nothing about plan lapse or Basic Monitoring — it does point at a 'Subscription Overview' page, which is where the answer would be, and which could not be retrieved (archive.org rate-limits the surrounding help centre). This does not affect the tier: battery backup, AVR and surge protection are untouched by any subscription. It is why APC is still not in the vendor ledger.
- Confirm current retail price band from a live manufacturer or major-retailer listing page; dynamic JavaScript pricing could not be captured during this pass.
- Confirm whether the SMT1500C's USB/serial protocol is identical to the older 'Smart-UPS 1500' NUT reports it against, or whether it uses the newer Modbus-based protocol some owners report causing incomplete data (e.g. missing line-voltage readings) with apcupsd — this affects how complete a 'full' NUT-based local replacement really is.
- Confirm whether declining a SmartConnect firmware update is possible, and whether any firmware ever pushes automatically without user action.
- Confirm default phones_home behavior: does an unregistered but Ethernet-connected unit send any telemetry to APC before a SmartConnect account is created?
