Manufacturers have shipped firmware that disables third-party cartridges on machines customers already owned, gated ink behind subscriptions, and made accounts mandatory to finish setup. The reliable escape is a printer with no network interface at all — if it cannot reach the manufacturer, none of this can happen to it.
