The unplug test
You still own the router. Administration happens at 192.168.8.1 on your own network with a password you set — no account, no app, no pairing to a manufacturer. Underneath it is OpenWrt, and the LuCI interface is right there rather than hidden, so the device is configurable to a depth most consumer routers do not permit. GL.iNet's GoodCloud remote-management service exists if you want to reach the router from outside; skipping it costs you nothing locally.
Why this tier: Ships running OpenWrt with the full LuCI interface, administered over a local address with no account, and firmware can be upgraded from a local file. GL.iNet does operate GoodCloud remote management, which is what places this at D2 rather than D1 — the cloud exists, it is simply not needed.

Where to buy
Open questions
- Is GoodCloud opt-in or enabled by default out of the box? The documentation presents it as optional but does not state the default, and that default is the difference between a clean D2 and a caveat.
- Does the router contact GL.iNet on first boot for firmware checks even when GoodCloud is unused, and can that be disabled in the UI?
- Confirm the OpenWrt build is close enough to upstream that the community can flash vanilla OpenWrt if GL.iNet stops shipping updates — that would be a meaningful longevity claim worth recording.
