The unplug test
Block the router or never connect the A1 to a network at all, and it still prints: slice the model in Bambu Studio on your own computer (a local, free application; no login is needed to slice or export), copy the resulting file to the printer's micro SD card, and start the print from the touchscreen. Bambu's own documentation describes this SD-card path explicitly for an unnetworked printer. What you lose offline is remote monitoring and control through the Bambu Handy app, cloud print notifications, MakerWorld's cloud slicing, and multi-printer fleet management -- all of it optional layered on top of a printer that prints the same way with or without it. A January 2025 firmware change briefly threatened to gate more of this behind cloud authentication and caused a public dispute with the third-party slicer community; Bambu's current wiki documents a 'Developer Mode' that, together with LAN Only mode, still opens the printer's local MQTT/FTP channel for full third-party control with no cloud account, which is what this record is based on.
Why this tier: Bambu Lab operates a real vendor cloud (Bambu Handy app, MakerWorld, cloud slicing/print queue) and the A1 ships Wi-Fi-connected by default, but Bambu's own wiki documents that account login is a separate, skippable step from Wi-Fi setup, and states plainly for this model: 'When the printer is not networked, you can export files to the SD card and initiate print jobs from there' -- i.e. core printing works with the printer never touching Bambu's servers and no account of any kind.

- Whether the A1 includes Bluetooth Low Energy hardware (Bambu's security page attributes BLE account-binding specifically to the P1 series; the A1 uses the same ESP32 SoC family per Bambu's open-source-software page, but BLE presence on A1 specifically was not independently confirmed).
- Current retail price could not be confirmed: the manufacturer's US store is a JavaScript-rendered page that did not expose price in static HTML, and third-party retailer pages (Micro Center, fccid.io) returned bot-protection challenges rather than content.
- fccid.io grantee search for Bambu Lab / its Chinese legal entity returned a bot-protection challenge rather than results, so fcc_id and a sibling-grant comparison could not be established in this pass.
- Whether the January 2025 authorization-control dispute (Bambu Lab announced mandatory authentication for firmware upgrades, print-job initiation and remote video, alarming the OrcaSlicer/third-party community) constitutes a ledger-worthy vendor incident is flagged to the maintainer separately; the record's own tier is based on the currently-documented state of LAN Only + Developer Mode, not on the vendor's past conduct.
- Whether the standard out-of-box setup wizard presents an explicit 'skip Wi-Fi / skip account' option versus simply not enforcing one at any step was not directly observed (based on documentation review, not a hands-on unboxing).
