The unplug test
It will not take off out of the box. DJI's manual requires activating the drone through the DJI Fly app with an internet connection before the very first flight — there is no offline first-run path. The nuance worth knowing: once that one-time activation is done, DJI's own manual states flight is still possible without being 'connected or logged into the app during flight,' just capped to 98.4 ft (30 m) altitude and 164 ft (50 m) range as a safety limit. So the ongoing dependency is milder than the setup gate suggests — but the setup gate itself is absolute, and that is what determines the tier here.
Why this tier: DJI's own user manual states, without qualification: 'The product must be activated using the DJI Fly app before being used for the first time. An internet connection is required for activation.' There is no documented way to fly the aircraft at all — even once, even in a restricted mode — before this one-time internet-gated app activation completes, and no local-only setup path is cited. That fails D2's 'no account required to complete setup' condition and matches the REJECT row for a mandatory activation gate with no cited path around it.

- Whether the DJI Fly app's activation/'Connection Guide' flow specifically requires creating or logging into a DJI account (as opposed to merely an internet connection) was not confirmed — the manual is explicit about the internet requirement but silent on account creation specifically for this step.
- No verified dumb/liberated drone alternative exists yet in this catalog. A drone or camera-equipped RC aircraft that completes setup with no mandatory internet-gated activation would be a valuable addition — this is a discovery task, not yet resolved.
- Whether current retail stock (Amazon, B&H, etc.) reflects the same $169/$374 pricing as the manufacturer's own store, which showed out-of-stock at time of check, is unconfirmed.
- Whether any documented liberation path (custom firmware, offline activation bypass) exists for DJI Neo was not researched within budget.
