The unplug test
You push the lever down, the wind-up timer dial ticks backward, and the toast pops when it reaches zero. You can check progress any time by pushing the ejector knob down and letting go (Peek & Pop) without cancelling the cycle. Unplugging and replugging changes nothing about how it behaves next time, because the only memory in the device is the mechanical position of the timer dial.
