The unplug test
Nothing changes for driving directions. The DriveSmart 66 has maps for the whole country loaded on the device at purchase, and Garmin's own Getting Started sequence — mount it, let it get a GPS fix, start a route — never mentions Wi-Fi, an app, or an account. Leave it disconnected forever and turn-by-turn navigation, search, and rerouting all work. What you lose is live traffic and weather overlays, smart notifications relayed from a paired phone, hands-free calling, Alexa voice features, and the convenience of over-the-air map updates (map updates are still possible offline via Garmin Express on a computer instead of Wi-Fi).
Why this tier: Garmin operates a real cloud (Garmin Drive app services for live traffic/weather/notifications, plus Garmin Express for updates), but the device ships with maps preloaded and Garmin's own manual states setup (mount, acquire GPS, adjust volume/brightness, start a route) requires no account or phone pairing at all — pairing with the Garmin Drive app and signing into a Garmin account is a separate, explicitly optional step described only in the 'Live Services, Traffic, and Smartphone Features' section for live traffic, weather, smart notifications, hands-free calling and Alexa. Turn-by-turn navigation with preloaded maps is core function and works fully unconnected.
