The unplug test
Nothing changes. Getting Started in Ricoh's own manual is battery, SD card, power on, set language and date, format the card, shoot — no app step, no activation, no account, at any point. Turn the camera's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off entirely (both ship off by default and must be manually enabled) and you lose exactly one thing: pushing images to a phone through the Image Sync app for wireless transfer or remote control. There is no Ricoh cloud behind any of this to lose — the manual documents no cloud service for the camera at all, unlike Fujifilm's Timeline or GoPro's Cloud subscription.
Why this tier: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are real (confirmed by FCC grant 2ACZS-R05010, DTS/Bluetooth-band module, matching the model number 'R05010' printed on the manual's title page and packing-list page), but the manufacturer's own operating manual documents no Ricoh-operated cloud service for this camera at all. The full 'Sharing Images' chapter covers exactly two paths: USB transfer to a computer, and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi pairing to Ricoh's 'Image Sync' companion app, which pairs directly to the camera's own radio (camera generates its own SSID/password; the app connects to that) with no sign-in step described anywhere in the pairing procedure. A full-text search of the manual for 'cloud', 'account', 'sign-in' and 'login' returns nothing tied to camera operation — the only web step in the entire manual is a one-time, explicitly optional customer-support registration page for firmware-update emails. No vendor cloud endpoint exists to name, which is the D1 test: radio and app present, no cloud to be optional about.

- Whether the GR IIIx remains a current, in-production SKU as of this record's date, or has been superseded in Ricoh's lineup by a newer GR-series model, was not confirmed — Ricoh's own product pages could not be fetched (returned 404 on every guessed URL), so availability is left unknown rather than guessed.
- Current US price could not be confirmed from a fetchable manufacturer or retailer page within budget.
- Whether firmware updates can be declined, and what telemetry (if any) the camera or Image Sync app sends to Ricoh, are unconfirmed.
- Whether Ricoh operates any cloud service for other camera lines (e.g. a newer GR model or the Pentax DSLR line) that might later apply to a GR IIIx firmware update was not checked — nothing in the current manual suggests one exists for this model.
