Sonos Ray
REJECT Rejected — requires a vendor cloud or account for core function
Why it was rejected
Setup cannot be completed without creating or logging into a Sonos account, and the app used to do that setup requires the device to be online. There is no path to first use that skips the account.
The unplug test
This soundbar cannot be turned into a usable product without first going through the Sonos app and a Sonos account, which itself requires an internet connection to complete. Once set up it plays optical audio from a TV, but there is no way to get from box to working speaker with the router off, and no documented offline first-run path exists.
Why this tier: Sonos's own support documentation states plainly that creating a Sonos account is required the first time a Sonos system is set up, and the system-requirements page separately requires a high-speed internet connection and a smartphone running the Sonos app to complete setup — an account mandatory at setup is a REJECT trigger on its own under the decision table, independent of anything the bar does afterward.

Open questions
- Did not verify whether a Sonos soundbar retains any function if the account is later deleted or Sonos suspends it post-setup — out of scope for this rejection, which rests on the setup gate alone, but worth a follow-up record if Sonos's cloud dependency for day-to-day playback is characterized in detail.
- Radios list (wifi, ble) is Sonos's generally-documented connectivity for this product line; not independently confirmed against an FCC grant for this run, since the rejection turns on the account-at-setup fact, not on the radio inventory.

History
- 2026-09-05 — First published as REJECT.
- 2026-09-05 — vendor_risk raised 0 -> 3 when Sonos was added to the ledger with three dated incidents. The tier is unchanged and was never affected: REJECT rests on the account being mandatory at setup, which is a fact about the device, not about the vendor's conduct.
