The unplug test
It works exactly the same. First-time setup on the camera itself is language, then area/date/time — connecting a smartphone during setup is explicitly optional and skipping it just moves you to the date/time screen. With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off, you lose the Creators' App's remote control and image transfer (which itself needs no Sony account to pair) and Sony's separate Creators' Cloud service, which does need an account and is off by default until you deliberately link one. Nothing about taking a photo, changing a setting, or reviewing images on the camera depends on either.
Why this tier: Sony's own Help Guide for this camera names a real cloud endpoint: 'Creators' Cloud' (sony.net/cc), a distinct, optional service requiring 'Creating an account for Creators' Cloud and linking your camera' and firmware Ver. 2.00 or later. That is separate from the Creators' App, which pairs to the camera directly over Bluetooth with no Sony account anywhere in the pairing steps. The camera's own initial-setup procedure completes fully through the on-camera menu (language, area/date/time) with no smartphone or account required; the guide states plainly that skipping smartphone connection just leads straight to the date/time screen. Because a vendor-operated cloud exists (Creators' Cloud) and every core function — shooting, menus, app pairing — works with no account and no connection, this is D2, not D1.

Open questions
- FCC grant for this specific camera's Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module was not located within budget — Sony's FCC grantee code AK8 (Sony Group Corporation) was confirmed and files radio equipment grants generally, but the exact grant covering the a6700's internal module was not pinned down. Not required for this D2 tier claim (which rests on the manual, not the FCC check), but worth completing on a later pass.
- Whether firmware updates can be declined, and what telemetry the camera sends to Sony with Wi-Fi/Bluetooth on but no Cloud account linked, are unconfirmed.
- Current US availability and price were not confirmed from a fetchable manufacturer or retailer page within budget (sony.com blocked automated fetch).
