The unplug test
Never touch the Wi-Fi button and this air purifier works exactly as designed: press Power, cycle Fan Speed through Auto/Low/Medium/High/Turbo/Sleep, and Auto mode adjusts itself using the unit's own built-in Smart Sensor reading gas/odor levels in the room — none of that touches a network. What you lose without the app is remote monitoring of air quality from outside the house, remote control, and filter-life tracking pushed to your phone. The purifier does not need an account to purify air; it needs one only if you want to check on it from your phone.
Why this tier: The Winix Smart app and its account back a real vendor cloud (remote monitoring, app control), but the unit's own manual documents a full physical control panel — Power, Fan Speed, Auto, Sleep, Wi-Fi (a separate opt-in button), and Filter Reset — and states Auto mode is driven by the unit's own internal Smart Sensor, not the app or cloud. - Whether the Winix Smart app itself mandates account registration could not be confirmed — winixamerica.com returns 403 to automated fetches on both the product page and the Wi-Fi setup page. account_required is app_only, which is the house value for a device that works with no account and an app that may want one; the residual uncertainty is about the app, not the purifier, whose entire control panel is physical.
- No FCC ID was found for the C545 specifically (a Winix grant for a different model, WINIX-QS, was found under a similar filing pattern, suggesting Winix does file per-model, but the C545's own ID was not located within budget).
- phones_home and firmware_ota_forced are unknown — no source describes what the Wi-Fi module reports to Winix's cloud or whether firmware updates can be declined.
